I feel terrible. I haven’t actually blogged since I set up this new website and released a compilation of various bedroom noodlings back in July. The fact that I haven’t touched this website would make you think I’d been doing something more mature, like gardening or decorating, maybe you thought I’d been taking long healthy walks in the healthy countryside and gaily feeding ducks by a pond, or maybe just sitting in front of my TV watching cult HBO series. Or maybe you thought i’d gone mad, moved into a tree house in the countryside where I now spend my days shouting and swearing at ducks and occasionally playing them songs on my two string ukulele… But au contraire my friends, things in the Untitled Fruit Company camp have actually been pretty busy.
In September I recorded some music for a new video game called Frobisher Says. The game is by my good friends at Honeyslug and will be released sometime in February on the PlayStation Vita. I will write a more fuller blog once the game is released and also provide an audio reel for any prospective future clients, but need I say this was the most fun I’ve had writing and recording in ages. It’s nice to have someone (or some thing? – thanks Frobisher! – whoever/whatever you are) telling you what to write. I could knock out 20 second loops in the key of C major for the rest of my life. My dream job would be to write radio jingles and my single greatest regret musically is that I DIDN’T write the music for the Bodyform advert..
After recording jingles and jangles for a very silly video game I felt suitably inspired to start another bunch of recordings which I hope to complete some time in the New Year. With the last set of recordings, I took samples that had been sitting on my hard drive for years so it was refreshing to start writing from scratch and within a fortnight, I managed to write 8 songs.. It’s not hugely different from Volume 1 but I feel like i’ve been able to extract some of the best parts from those sessions and create more of a consistent feel and sound to the songs. I also don’t want to spend ages meticulously mixing (badly) or pondering over which synth sound to have. This is basically what caused me to lose direction last time (I give Volume 1 a 5/10) and making it sound (in parts) like a muddy mess. Again, the songs are mostly based on loops but I’m keeping the singing to a minimum as I definitely preferred writing the more ‘Livetronica’ style songs. Oh and to tell you the truth, I also can’t be bothered spending ages writing lyrics.
Anyway, I was planning on using my vocoder today to finish off another track but seeing as it’s broken, I thought i’d write a blog and upload another song I recorded. This is a LOUD instrumental. It is best listened to just as you are serving up your Sunday Roast. I don’t know about you, but it takes practice perfecting the timing so that everything finishes cooking at the same time and then you have to get it to the table before anything gets cold. I love cooking but serving it up can sometimes be stressful.. I hope one day, this track will be used in Master Chef.
